But this article is meant to expand on some hopeful news in this area. There have been excellent reports here in Laguna Hills, California showing how upper cervical chiropractic can help fibromyalgia patients. Upper cervical chiropractic care could be the treatment option you’ve been waiting for.

A Case Study Shows Positive Effects of Upper Cervical Chiropractic on Fibromyalgia

A 2016 case study revealed evidence that upper cervical chiropractic care could provide relief for fibromyalgia patients. The study was based on a 31-year-old woman with fibromyalgia. It was also suspected that she had another serious condition (something autoimmune in nature like lupus or multiple sclerosis) causing more complications for her. She was experiencing multiple symptoms such as pain, weakness, and fatigue combined with dizziness and general balance issues that made it necessary for her to have assistance while walking. She was even informed that she would be needing a wheelchair.

At about this same time she met an upper cervical chiropractor who was amazed at her trauma history. Between the ages of 12 and 19, she was involved in serious car accidents on three separate occasions. The first symptoms that she had were back pain and headaches, which began after her the first accident. The other symptoms followed, one after the other, between ages of 29 and 31.

During her examination, X-rays showed an upper cervical misalignment. This was not a surprise due to the evidence of a high left shoulder and right tilt to her head posture. During the first month, she was examined three times a week and given an adjustment to her upper cervical vertebrae as needed. This changed to twice per week during the second month and once a week in the third month of care. As soon as the atlas began to stay in position, she was able to walk independently again and the treatments were set to be even further apart. After six months of care, the patient had her quality of life restored. She began exercising again and was able to lose the weight that she had put on due to the sedentary requirements of her illness. She also experienced a dramatic drop in pain levels and her spasms decreased significantly.

How are these results possible?

How Does Upper Cervical Chiropractic Affect Fibromyalgia?

The researchers from this study suggest that the patient benefitted from upper cervical chiropractic care because the correction to the upper cervical misalignment removed pressure that was interrupting the central nervous system (CNS) function. Why would a misalignment in the top of the neck impact the function of the CNS so profoundly? These are three of the main contributors:

  • Communication – The brainstem is like an operating board for incoming and out going messages between the brain and body via the spinal cord. Every signal from body and brain passes through the brainstem on its journey to its destination. The top bone of the spine (the atlas) acts as a protective covering where the brainstem and the spinal cord meet, completely concealing the two within itself. The slightest misalignment could put pressure on parts of the brainstem and disrupt communication within the body.
  • Blood flow – The cervical spine helps with blood flow to the brain by allowing the flow between its tiny loops of bone on each vertebra called vertebral foramen. The vertebral arteries travel through these loops while bringing oxygen-rich blood to the brain. Even the most minimal misalignment in the neck could change the proper blood flow, causing issues with proper CNS function and other issues.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid flow (CSF) – Upright MRIs can detect any alterations in CSF drainage if the upper cervical spine is out of alignment. When the CSF is unable to drain well, it can cause an increase in intracranial pressure while the fluid starts to build up. Once again, optimal function of the whole body relies tremendously upon a properly aligned atlas.

Knowing how the proper alignment of the upper cervical spine impacts the healthy function of the central nervous system, it becomes obvious that correcting any misalignments in the neck would potentially help fibromyalgia patients. What does this specific form of upper cervical care look like?

More on the NUCCA Technique and Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care

NUCCA is a safe and gentle method of correcting upper cervical misalignments and restoring balance to the body. It does not involve the popping, twisting, cracking maneuvers that some regular chiropractors use. Some patients even wonder if the gentle adjustments could actually be as powerful as they have heard, until they experience the results themselves.

After your first adjustment here at Precision Spinal Care, you will have a few different experiences. Commonly, the most obvious result is a decrease in symptoms due to the healing process that starts inside the body. Healing can sometimes bring on some fatigue or mild soreness in the neck. After only one or two visits, many of our patients see results as well as noticing the adjustments beginning to hold longer.

As the body heals and the adjustments maintain themselves, you can come in for appointments less frequently. This essentially means lower cost for you with fewer visits over time – something many of our patinets appreciate. In fact, we will educate you and provide ways for you to help maximize how long your adjustments last. We’re in the business of seeing our patients recovered and restored, not in trying to keep you coming back. We want you to find real relief as quickly as possible.
